Businesses Say They Care About Security, But We’re Not So Sure

The Wall Street Journal, September 12,2008

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Saying it and doing it are two different things”. This idea quickly sums up the Wall Street Journal’s point of view on businesses’ overall concerns with security. Let us explain why.

Web-security company Finjan recently released the results of its survey of 1,387 IT professionals, revealing some interesting findings:

  • 91 percent believe that cyber crime is a risk to their businesses.
  • Of the information that thieves can get their hands on, 68 percent of businesses are most worried about their intellectual property, 54 percent about its employee information and 47 percent about its customer information.
  • Only 25 percent of the survey respondents said they’ve experienced a breach and 42 percent said they aren’t aware whether they’ve been breached or not.
  • Regardless if you’ve been the victim of a security breach of any sort, the survey results suggest that companies aren’t paying as much attention to their security measures as they should. It’s just a simple matter of whether or not you’ve been exposed. So what’s the truth – are companies really worried about security? Let us know what you think.
