Google Offers Online Archiving for Hosted Email

Byte and Switch, April 4, 2008

Although you may not have heard much about it, this was an important week for Google as the IT giant added archiving services to its email services. Google Message Discovery is now offered to Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino customers, as well as an add on to current Google applications such as the ever-popular, Gmail service.

The purpose of the service is to help users properly manage their emails and provide “on-demand e-discovery.”

“Google Message Discovery captures and indexes messages, enforces policies, consolidates email from multiple sources, searches messages for legal hold or retention, and logs all activities for audit purposes.”

We think this is great news on a variety of levels. For starters, Google’s name will help raise awareness of e-discovery and the importance of addressing it head-on. In addition, Google may motivate competitors to implement archiving solutions in order to stay afloat and current in the legal industry. Whatever happens, we’re glad to see movement here.
